CANINE heroes and their handlers have been captured in this spectacular collection of images by Oxford Mail Camera Club member Mark Bentley.

Dogs have served in law enforcement since the Middle Ages. Today, the most popular breeds in the force are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, and occasionally mixes of these breeds. Rottweilers, Doberman Pinchers, and Bouvier de Flandres are rare, but they also contribute sometimes.

German Shepherds stand in the front rank of canine royalty, and experts say it's mostly due to their character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones really make these dogs special. German Shepherds are gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but before they become any of these things, they are the cutest puppies.

There are plenty of myths and stories out there that explain why dogs are the way they are, and legends make these breeds more mysterious and fun to think about.

Named to honor a Massachusetts police dog shot nearly four years ago, “Nero’s Law” is sitting on the governor’s desk, awaiting his signature. The bipartisan legislation — “An Act allowing humane transportation of K9 partners” — cleared the Massachusetts House Monday, Feb.

Air Force Maj. Matt Kowalski and San Antonio Postmaster Robert Carr unveiled the U.S. Postal Service’s newest forever stamp, which honors the contributions of military working dogs. The stamp features the four most common breeds associated with military work: the German shepherd, the Labrador retriever, the Belgian Malinois and the Dutch shepherd.
