Heat Safety Tips

Hi everyone, in light of the recent tragic passing of Dr Michael Mosley on the Greek island of Symi, and the current heatwaves in Greece, I wanted to post some tips for staying safe in the heat.

  1. Avoid physical activities outdoors between the hours of 12 to 3 pm at an absolute minimum. That is the hottest time of day and you are prone to heatstroke. You can go swimming during this time, but seek the shade as far as possible, and wear a hat and sunscreen if you do.

  2. Strenuous physical activity like jogging should be reserved for early morning or after 6 pm, especially if you are over 40-50.

  3. Wear a hat and SPF and carry water with you everywhere whenever you are out in the heat. A handheld fan can also provide some comfort.

  4. Seek the shade (or a/c) as often as possible. If you are in the city centre, going into a shop with a/c for a few minutes can provide some respite.

  5. Remember that rocks and cement get scorching hot in the sun, so when you are out and about, you are exposed to the heat from both above and below.

  6. Take multiple cool showers if you can during the day, or drench your head under running water if possible.

  7. Alternatively, splash water on yourself every so often (your face, the back of your neck and other pulse points like the inside of your elbows, the backs of your knees and wrists) for short-term relief. Splashing water on your skin mimics the mechanism of sweating, without leading to dehydration.

  8. Wear natural fibres to let your skin breathe.

  9. Avoid heavy meals in the heat and drink more fluids than you normally would.

  10. Avoid alcohol in the sun, however, especially near bodies of water. This last one is really something you should be doing year-round for your safety.

  11. If you feel faint or nauseous, ask a local for help.

  12. If you get sunburnt, apply yogurt to your skin like a balm, take anti-inflammatory medication (but first seek medical advice if you have contra-indications to it) and rest up!

Stay safe peeps, and do as the Greeks do when it’s too hot.

Wrong choice booking Corfu town? Wrong choice booking Corfu town?

Hi,

I booked a trip the first week of july to Corfu for a week and paid for a lovely accommodation in Corfu Town, like literally in the center of it. We will be renting a car to go to the beaches in the north and west. But now I’m reading on reddit that Corfu Town is really hot in the summer and that it is too long to stay there for a week. Does someone have experience with this? Did I make the wrong choice?

Sunscreen Help! Sunscreen Help!

Hi all!

I'm on a quest to find some non-slimy-residue, non-staining sunscreen. I've already made my way through the bottle of the product I brought from home, and have so far experienced two new products that are not the right fit for me.

I have fair, combination skin, and I usually use Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, which sets on my skin well, is good enough to use on my face under makeup, and which doesn't stain my clothes with oil or odd colours. I am kicking myself for not packing more of this - completely my fault, I should have realised how much sunblock I wad going to go through while here - as so far I haven't encountered it here.

I've since tried:

  1. Apvita Bee Sun Safe SPF 30. This left heavy, oily slicks on my skin, and greasy marks on my clothes.

  2. Bioderma Photo derma Brume Invisible SPF50. This has a lighter feel, but still feels like a fine layer of oil on my skin hours after it has set. It has also left horrible yellow stains on my white tops, which after a quick google, seems like it's common with sunblock brands due to a couple of ingredients, such as avobenzone.

Does anyone have any recommendations for sunblocks I can easily buy in a pharmacy or makeup store that might fit the bill? (Perhaps also any tips on if it's possible to rescue yellow-stained clothing from the convenience of your hotel room?)

Thanks all!

Beware Flying Olympic Air from Islands to Athens Beware Flying Olympic Air from Islands to Athens
Recommendations

Hey y’all! I wanted to give a PSA to anyone who is flying from one of the islands (Paros, Santorini, Ios, Milos, etc) to Athens on Aeagan / Olympic Air. We took a 7pm flight from Milos to Athens and our baggage was never loaded onto the small plane to Athens.

When we arrived at the Athens airport, the entire flight realized our bags never arrived. It turned out that because our flight was slightly delayed, Olympic Air opted to just not load our bags on the plane to save time and avoid issuing the passengers free flights. We both had carry on duffle bags but because the plane was so small, we had to check them. We chose to fly because we thought it would be faster than a 4 hour ferry ride, but after the whole ordeal, it ended up being longer. We had to file a claim with Athens airport and the line was pretty long. We didn’t have anything (clothes, things we bought, toiletries, etc) and all we could hope is that our luggage arrived before we left the next day. When we arrived at the airport the next morning we had good news that they had loaded the bags onto the first plane out and we did end up getting our luggage in time, however, we witnessed around us this exact thing happening to multiple flights.

A lot of lessons were learned through this experience on how to be prepared better moving forward on small planes like that, but we wanted to share our experience in this group for anyone considering flying or what to be prepared for if you bought a ticket already. In our case it worked out with our flight back to the states but not everyone on our flight was as lucky.

Safe travels!

Spending Money Spending Money

Good day everyone,

My best friend and I are going to Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos for 11 days in less than a month. The flight, hotels and ferry transfers are already paid for. I’m trying to make sure we have an idea of how much spending money for food, going out and excursions will we need. We are not renting a car due to no license (NYC feet is our transportation lol) so we will be taking taxis to get around the islands as well.

Please help 🥹🥹

Meteora to Corfu Meteora to Corfu

In September I will be visiting Meteora for one day/night and thought that maybe I could also visit the island of Corfu for two days before I head back to our village near Thessaloniki. I see that the drive from Meteora is about 3 hours to the ferry….are there ferries every day and how long is the boat ride to the island? Do I need to reserve or can I just show up? Once on the island is there a village you can recommend or places to see/visit? I just thought of the idea and will read up on some stuff myself but thought I would get ideas here as well. Thanks.

Do you think I found a good vehicle rental? Do you think I found a good vehicle rental?

Travelling in off season - so sticking mostly to mainland

Rented a vehicle through "AutoUnion Car Rental" - they seem to be rated "ok" - any thoughts here?

Pickup is in Athens Airport on Dec 19 -

Dropoff is Jan 4 - So 16 days

Cost was 1150 Euros all in including taxes and everything - 71 Euros a day

Vehicle - 9-seat minivan Citroen Jumpy or similar - Automatic Transmission ( this adds to the cost a bit - I can drive manual - but driving manual when i dont drive manual day to day - for over 2 weeks in a foreign country sounded like a terrible idea )

Getting to and from Meteora from Athens Getting to and from Meteora from Athens
Question

My partner and I will be heading from Athens to Meteora August 13th, and returning to Athens on the 14th. What's the best way to go about that? I can't seem to book anything for those dates, and I've heard there might be issues with the trains. Would it be best to just rent a car from the outskirts of Athens? Would I need to book a car a long time in advance? I'm fine with the bus or train, I just want to make the most of the trip, and have everything booked as far in advance as I can. Thank you for your advice!
