Law School Student's FAQs:
MOD

I created this FAQ so that the common questions with regard to law school should be addressed, and not to repeat the thread, as shown in the previous posts here. So here it goes:

  1. Pwede po ba eto ang pre-law ko?

Ans: Thank you u/Petrichor005 for this. I have seen so many a post in connection with this question. Guys, any pre-law course is acceptable in law school as long as you graduate a 4 year course in college. Although there are advantages of different courses in college when you enter law, you are all in equal footing. Sure, Accountancy, for example, has a lot of law subjects, but you could surpass them by studying and discipline.

2. Incoming 1L. Ano pong books ang pwede kong basahin for advanced reading?

Ans: Thank you u/chiefyaj. I don't recommend advanced reading. If you are an incoming 1st year, enjoy the rest of your free time, because once in you are in law school, free time is a luxury, an essential luxury. Moreover, studying in advance will lead you to burnout. It would be best to wait for your professor’s course syllabus so that you will have a proper guide on what to read.

3. Pwede po ba mag work full time pag nag enroll sa law?

Ans: Sure! A lot of students do that. Heck, some working students thrived, and got honors in law school.

4. Makakasurvive na po ba ako sa pdfs kasi mahal daw po ang law books?

Ans: Yes. Reading PDFs is a cost effective way to save from the book expenses in law school especially when the subject is a 2 or 1 unit only. I, for one, read some PDFs when I was in law school, but my comprehension, and memory retention are stronger when I read physical books.

5. Am I too old to go to law school?

Ans: No. There is no age cap in law school. As long as you have a determination to study the law, no one can stop you from learning. I had had classmates who are senior citizens!

6. Codals for freshman

Ans: Go to your subjects, There, you will know the answer.

7. How to pick which law school

Ans: It depends on your preference whether you are working, or not. Should you enroll in the big three law schools, it would be advisable to study full time as you will be having a hard time adjusting to their schedule. But, I have heard the UP law has a schedule that caters working students. Arellano, in my opinion, is the best school for working students because you can pick a schedule that suited to your working hours.

8. What to expect

Ans: Observe the atmosphere, and study.

9. How to cope with the pressure.

Ans: Coping with pressure depends on the individual. Some escape the pressure by watching movies, or drinking, but the decision lies on you. You could go for a walk, or exercise.

10. Contact numbers or the most reliable way to contact the law school (this will be specific like example sbca - calls, in person, and email), and Where to look for cases, full text, international cases, and etc.

Ans: Part of the law profession is research. As such, you should have good skills in researching. Google it! XD

By the way, thank you u/aenzo2696 for these three questions!

11. Book suggestions.

Ans: See for yourself. Borrow from the school's library books of the same subject with different authors. I mention this because the students' read, and comprehend from different authors are different, so it is recommended to read different authors' works. However, my advice is to read from one author and stick to it.

I will make a Wiki for this. Unfortunately, the Wiki is down. So I will pin this post for your reference.

Edit: I created a rule that one must first read this FAQ. When a user has posted a thread similar, or impliedly the same as that in the FAQ, such post will be deleted.

Advice

Some would say wag muna kayo mag-advanced reading at i-enjoy niyo na lang natitirang panahon niyo na malaya. I disagree!

That’s what most of us did. Pero ginulat kami ng Beda-M.

For first years, holy trinity ang papatay* senyo—Crim1, Consti1, PFR. Believe me or not, only few out of all deserving students will pass all three of these subjects. That is the DESIGN.

On my 3rd year here already, dami nang ups and downs, hits and misses. Pero pag nakuha mo na yung style ng Beda-M, kayang kaya na.

Ask lang kayo ng tulong dahil walang nagsu-survive sa Beda-M without having people within their corner. Our culture is built on network and pakikisama.

*emphasis on “papatay” dahil marami sa mga kakilala ko nung first year ang nag-LOA na, lumipat ng school, nagpahinga, nagkasakit at nadepress, and worse—pinatay ang pangarap.

Quick Q re: Subsequent remarriage due to presumed death of absentee spouse Quick Q re: Subsequent remarriage due to presumed death of absentee spouse
Question & Hypotheticals

Going 2L this coming SY, hopefully. I have been re-studying laws on PFR, and I bumped into a question I did not think of before. Article 41 of the FC sanctions the validity of a subsequent marriage entered into by an already married person, provided that they have obtained a judicial declaration of the presumptive death of their first spouse.

If the requisites are present, the subsequent marriage is perfectly valid. It will only be terminated upon: (1) recording of the affidavit of reappearance, or (2) judicial declaration of termination.

The appearance of the previously presumed deceased spouse does not automatically terminate the subsequent spouse. Thus, their reappearance alone, without the recording of the affidavit or the needed judicial declaration, and even with notice to the original spouse who remarried, cannot terminate the subsequent marriage.

My question is:

Suppose the presumed deceased spouse re-appeared, and their original spouse have validly contracted a subsequent remarriage. The supposed deceased spouse even notified their original spouse. However, no action was taken. There was no recording of affidavit of reappearance, nor was there a petition for the termination of the subsequent marriage. All concerned parties are eager to just continue with the way things are, and live their own lives.

Main q: May the supposed deceased spouse contract another marriage of their own?
Prelim q: What is the status of the first marriage in this case? May a deceased person, at least by legal fiction, even contract marriage? XD

Just passed the TDSOL and now i’m looking for a place to stay. I’m a female and from the south so commuting/driving is not an option because it would drain me. I have tried looking for condos but it’s kinda expensive for one person so I’m considering to look for a roommate. I dont have a condo/place to stay yet but if you’re a female and also interested to be roommates with me, we can look for a place together that we’d both like. P.S. im clean (dont have to worry about having a messy roommate) and a CPA (so yea masipag ako magaral)

Why isn't PH BigLaw as well-paid compared to US BigLaw? Why isn't PH BigLaw as well-paid compared to US BigLaw?
Discussions

Hopped on over to r/biglaw and the posts I see about total compensation are just mind boggling. 200k+ for a Junior Associate seems like the norm. Yet in the posts I see, JAs only get on average 60k per month at BigLaw here in the Philippines.

Is it because of lack of pay transparency? Taboo against lateraling? Little national economic activity? Low cost of living and no student loans? The idea that law is not a profit-making venture?

What are your thoughts?

DLSU LAW or PUP LAW? DLSU LAW or PUP LAW?
Discussions

Incoming freshman and i’m really torn about choosing if dlsu law or pup law. PUP law is well-known for their high bar exam passers rates but worried din sa mga nakikita ko na horror stories here. DLSU law is also nice in terms of facilitating a good environment yun nga lang medyo mababa rate ng bar exam passers nila compared to PUP. Also, mas madami ba talaga job opportunities if DLSU law grad? Any thoughts?

Tuition fee - i’m leaning towards PUP since i have plans on living independently soon.

Should I go to law school this year? Should I go to law school this year?
Working

Hi everyone. I badly needed your opinion on this one.

For context, I just passed the CPALE May 2024 and was torn if mag-lalawschool na ba ako this academic year. Target school ko sana is Ateneo, UP or UST. At this time, UST nalang ang open. Nanghihinayang kasi ako sa time if magwait pa ako ng 1 yr or antayin ko nalang mag open ulit for next year to try UP and Ateneo since sila talaga yung main option ko.

Also, I’m working as a management trainee sa isang MNC and next year na yung graduation ko sa program. With this position, there’s a probability na ma-assign ako sa midshift and baka maka-affect siya if ever sa night classes ko.

Hindi na ako makapag-decide huhu note that hindi option mag-resign kasi I have to fund my own studies and gastos.
