Kevin Warren says he’s still confident a new stadium for the Bears will get done Kevin Warren says he’s still confident a new stadium for the Bears will get done

The Bears’ long quest to get a new stadium was dealt another setback when Illinois passed its budget without allocating anything that the Bears had asked for. But Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren says he still believes something will get done.

“I’m confident at the correct time that we will come together to figure out a stadium solution,” Warren said, via NBCSportsChicago.com.

The Bears’ proposed solution includes tax money from the state making up a significant chunk of the funding for the stadium, and that has been called a non-starter by state officials, who say they’re simply not going to do a deal that makes the taxpayers foot the ball for a stadium that will benefit an already very profitable business like the Bears. But Warren indicated that he believes state leaders can come around to the Bears’ way of seeing things after the November election.

“This is an election year,” Warren said. “We have people who don’t have meals to eat. We have people sleeping on the street. We have a lot of complex issues that we are dealing with. I’m a realist to understand that these projects are not something you do over a weekend.”

The Bears are going to keep pushing for taxpayers to pay for a part of their stadium project, but there’s been no appetite for that in Illinois, Warren’s optimism aside.

Calvin Johnson's 1964 yard single season in Bears context Calvin Johnson's 1964 yard single season in Bears context

Inspired by this post where Calvin Johnson thinks his record will fall soon. Let us define 1964 yards as on Prime Megatron, or PMT.

  • The Bears single season receiving record is 2012 Brandon Marshal with 1508, or 0.77 PMT. Obviously this number had to be less than one (that is how records work after all) but to think that Marshal got 77% of the way there actually doesn't feel so bad.

  • Things get bleaker when you look at career records however. The Bears all time leading receiver is Johnny Morris with 5059, or 2.56 PMT. Said another way, if we had Prime Megatron on our team, it would only take him 2 and a half seasons to be our all-time record holder. Wild.

  • Maybe there's hope though! Rome Odunze needs to average 1012 yards per season over his five year rookie contract (and 5th year option) to take that lead. That's only 0.52 PMT each year! Rome doesn't need to be Megatron... if he's literally half as good he's going to shatter all of the franchise records.

  • Meanwhile, in his one season with the Bears DJ Moore had 1364 yards, or 0.69 PMT. This was quietly good for the 4th best Bears WR season ever. If DJ continues at this same rate, HE will be our all time leading receiver within 3 more seasons.

  • And in case you were curious, Keenan Allen's best season was in 2017 with 1393 yards, or 0.71 PMT. Last year, at age 31 and only playing 13 games he still managed 1243 or 0.63 PMT. That would have been the Bear's 8th best receiving season ever, right behind 2020 Allen Robinson.

In conclusion, the bar is set so low here Caleb and company can trip over it and it will still be exciting. Get ready for some record setting football. All stats from pro-football-reference.
