Imagine the hushed whispers among the employees when they recognized the guy the next time he comes in

dude that's the legendary one, he will free us all

His story has passed down from cashier at register 5, to cashier at register 5 through the ages!

The tongue, a small part of the body that is used to taste the food and drinks we consume; yet it is also an agent that can be utilized to build, destroy, or heal human affairs. With the tongue, nations have been established, wars and revolutions were instigated, lives have been lost, souls were enlivened, and relationships were either broken or strengthened. Imagine, a tiny piece of flesh can do enormous damage or benefit to the people it affects.

The entire time reading that I had this image in my head of French kisses and people eating each other out.

I was a worshipper of the Great One, like my shift manager before me, and his shift manager before him...

They say he will one day appear like the whiff of mango-flavored sanitary napkins out of thin air, the scriptures i found tacked up at the notice board in the staff room claim it will be in the yogurt isle, but i have undying confidence in the righteousness of the "10% off due to expired date" basket.

As someone who worked in a phone retailer for a long time, can confirm. It's as old and tired as just about every other joke customers think are original.

Most likely we'd just be glad it wasn't another dick pic this time.

ā€¢

Yep pretty much, because that happens too. And oh god the number of nudes and just porn I've seen on customer phones is ungodly. Had a woman come in with some issues with her iPhone and it ended up needed to be swapped out. Was within the 14 day return window for our store so we handled it in house and did an iCloud restore for her. Well that iCloud backup in case anyone wasn't aware makes an exact copy of everything selected at the time of reset. Well we restore this woman's phone and once we get through the set up the background is just head to toe the backside of a naked man. I don't say a word when I see this ( I was holding the phone she couldnt see it at first) I just hand her the phone and as soon as she sees it she goes "oh my god, I have no idea how that is my background, how could that have happened?" To save her some embarrassment I just made something up about how sometimes the backup files get a little wonky and swap some stuff around. But we both know what the situation really was lol.

ā€¢

Speaking of dick pick, I used to work retail too, and once some really old couple, like between 70-80, took a pic. But the guy dropped his pants to his ankle while the woman posed besides his dick with both thumbs up.
How the fuck they managed that without being caught will forever remain a mystery as this is a pretty busy store.

Used to work at Apple Store and can confirm the amount of penis I saw on demo devices was insane.

People love showing other people dicks.

Yepp. And then we have to go in and revert every single phone back to the default wallpaper.

ā€¢

Yep, and over the course of the 20-30 phones the store likely has its an annoying ass thing to do. Which has to be done 3-4 times a week because every child and goofy adult that thinks they're clever does it.

u/chinkostu avatar

If they're enrolled on Apples demo service then they reset themselves every day.

A lot of android demo's self wipe as well if set up correctly.

If it only has the generic Apple demo software then you have to go in and change it manually which is a complete pain in the arse across a store. If I came across photos like OPs i'd piss myself though just from the effort taken!

No joke, when I was about 12 my friend and I would ride our bikes all around town anywhere the bike path could access. One of our frequent loitering spots was Circuit City when they still existed. One day I decided to do this exact thing on all the Motorola Razr flip phones, along with and ridiculous videos. Cut to a month later im back in there with my dad who's looking at some stuff, and I'm roaming around on my own. All of a sudden an employee comes over, gets a look at me and goes "it's you!" I say "WUT?", and he goes "You're the kid from the videos!! We've all been playing your videos on the big screen all month!" At this point I begin to panic that my dad will over hear and be pissed, so I begin to awkwardly apologize and scurry away with this guy still cackling behind me.

When I worked retail tech this happened like weekly. It was amusing when it was something like this. Less amusing when some 25 year old douche put pictures of dicks on things. That said most of our displays had demos running that reset their backgrounds every hour or so (some were like every 5 minutes).

I'm no depraved idiot putting dick pics on anyone's phone, but if I were, I'd just take a picture with my phone and take a picture of my phone with the display phone.

It's not hard for people to do bad things, but most people who want to do bad things don't think long enough to make a plan.

It can become a feedback loop of not thinking and doing bad things as a result.

Edit: Just to be clear, No one should do what I just said. It's wrong. Don't be an asshole.

When I was 12 I had the idea of changing a couple of Macs in the apple store to have a Windows logo background. Definitely thought I was a mad lad and snuck out after two computers because I got scared they would confront me

ā€¢

I've had kids do that all the time when I worked retail. I'd usually just snicker at them and pretend I didn't see anything. When they left I'd just undo whatever I saw them do.

It would be funny if they use one of his pictures on the phones and make a ā€œlook out for this guyā€ flyer

I used to work there. Nobody paid attention to that. Thereā€™s always somebody making a stupid face on the iPhones. Itā€™s like the usual man.

I like to take pictures of my elbow, it looks like a butt. Watching people looking at the phone afterwards is quite amusing. Also going in a week later and seeing the picture is still on the camera roll is great.

Hate to be that guy, but if Best Buy uses the standard apple demo software, they reset these settings usually every hour or so.

ā€¢

So then I donā€™t have to worry about some poor schlub having to change it himself

u/n3cr0p0lis avatar

Depends on the store.

Source: I am the poor schlub you speak of. Literally just a few hours ago had to reset some iPads backgrounds cause some younger teens came in and took a bunch of group selfies flipping the camera off and changed them to the background pictures on all our displays.

Dude same I used to sell phones at a warehouse store I wonā€™t name and it was a pain in the ass cause every time some kid came in and changed the backgrounds Iā€™d have to go around and reset them all and check them all or my boss would have a fit.

have also been this poor schlub. going through 20 devices and deleting the 50-100 photos taken on each of them daily was less than fun.

and we didn't have the option not to, as 10-14 year olds would take dozens of selfies, and then if we missed deleting them, sometimes you'd catch creepy old dudes browsing the photos.

u/loli_smasher avatar

Eh. Where I work with, the background doesnā€™t change itself for phone demo.

I wish I could curse people who do this with having their face expression stuck, forever, like the one their took their picture with.

You should print them out and put them on some sort of wall of shame. So next time they come in they can still see their picture, along with every other shopper.

While this little joke is harmless (although it gets really boring really quick when you get the same thing every single day), sometimes girls will put links to their patreons, or put in their "private" Snapchat names, and we even had a guy hotspot his phone to them, open up really nasty porn, then close safari, so that the next person to open safari gets a surprise.

I don't know if places like Walmart even still have a wall of alarm clocks anymore as it's been many years since I've even looked, but when I was a teenager some buddies and I would go in and set all of the alarms on all the display models of alarm clocks to go off within about a 5-minute span of each other so that employees would have to keep going back to unplug them or turn them off.

u/that_guy_you_kno avatar

I was walking through Walmart the other day and found myself in the kitchen aisle. I saw that someone had set at least 15 of those old fashioned dial-and-ding kitchen alarms to the same time, three minutes away. I got out of there quick.

If it were a food store it would be the equivalent of walking down an aisle and trashing the shelves. Someone has to fix every phone and in the meantime any customer that sees it is gonna think less of any store...aaaand if there's a corporate visit and a DM sees that on the phones...you're just fucked. In my own opinion. This is not funny, and it borderlines cringey more than anything.

My reason for this, is because OP is the one that took the pictures and then uploaded it to reddit. Like "Look at this wacky thing I did today guys!" If OP wasn't the person that took the picture, then I could see the humor in it.

Like if OP were my friend, and they came up to me and showed me this video of him, I would not think it's funny. I might chuckle, but just for his sake. Now if he came to me with a video of someone random guy taking the picture, I would laugh a little more genuinely.

But this is just my opinion. And since I know reddit likes to downvote people based on their opinions, feel free to do so.

I did this in a random classroom in my college a few months ago. I took a picture in photo booth that made me look cartoonishly deformed and put it on all the desktop backgrounds then I printed it out and nailed it to the wall and then spelled out ā€œstrudelā€ in thumbtacks on the bulletin board.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine who had class in there told me they kept everything up in there for the entire semester and any time someone used a thumbtack they would make sure to return it to the strudel board. Apparently on the last day of class a girl just walked up to the wall said ā€œwell thatā€™s thatā€ and then tour up my picture and threw the shreds into the air.

Fun fact: the image of iOS Apple provides for retail demo devices will automatically wipe these photos and reset the home to its demo setup/settings when the device is restarted

Back in the 80s you used to have home computer sections in big stores, showing off the latest games. Games, I should remind you, that had to be loaded from cassette and took like 20 minutes to load.

Teen me used to stop a game and run a few lines of code that would make the screen flash and flicker and look like it was loading The Next Big Game that wasnā€™t out yet. Then wander off.

You could go back anytime over the next few hours and find it surrounded by excited kids who thought they were about to play a cool game.

This is such a pain in the ass for employees during closing time, at least at the wireless stores. We had to stay after closing time to delete all pictures (as well as texts, calls, browsing history) and reset the wallpapers customers left on the phones. Please donā€™t do this.

ā€¢

Can confirm, worked at a Best Buy Mobile standalone store for 6 years. I haven't worked in the industry for 3 years, but most of the demos at that time still saved stuff. Things could have changed since then.

People do some weird things on phones that don't belong to them.

The place I work has a very strict policy on not storing customer information, including pictures, on any device in our store; that also means the demo phones and tablets we have on display.

If the wrong HO person comes in one day to this, there could be some serious reprimanding.

I echo the point: please don't do this.
