Quote from Ben Stiller on Apple not giving specific numbers on viewership:
"They don’t tell you the numbers. It’s really weird. So, you get these graphs and charts, like I said, that have like peaks and valleys. But you don’t know what the baseline is. I guess could be like, based on 100 people or could be like, 200 million people. We don’t know. They basically say, ‘Yeah, this is doing well.’ You’re trying to interpret what they’re saying.”
How ironic...
Obviously not as good as Severance but probably my 2nd favorite show in the last five years. Theres a lot of shows around that B+ to A- tier recently (Shogun, Silo, Andor, Raised by Wolves, House of the Dragon, The Boys, Invincible) but this show has the potential to be a step above while sharing similar big questions and themes with Severance.
It can get confusing if you want to start it because you might not even find it in the first couple results of a search due to another show by the same name but it is on Apple and stars Joel Edgerton and the fantastic Jennifer Connely. Closest vibes i have gotten to Severance.
This may have been discussed elsewhere but I haven’t seen it. What is so important about Mark that he is the one Cobel is living next door to and stalks his family? Why is it his wife that is working with him at Lumon? And was her “death” staged by Lumon as part of an experiment? Does my question even make sense? Why does it seem there is a specific focus on Mark by Cobel?
Do they wipe Mark’s innie’s memory in Season 2 since he reappears on the table like he’s brand new?
Zach Galifianakis. It's similar to Severance in that it's an odd corporation dealing with a magical real problem, but this movie is more of a comedy.
The Jeffers Corporation has a problem with their employees exploding. Literally.
It was one of my favorite movies 10+ years ago because of the absurdity. It's literally the only thing I can compare Severance to. Both companies have hilariously arbitrary rules and rewards, both are metaphors for corporate burnout.
If anyone isn't sold yet: the Jeffers Corporation logo is a middle finger of buildings, and all the employees greet each other by flipping the bird.
What’s up with this caption?
I feel like we should discuss it.
The security guard at the severed elevator that scans people before they go on the elevator and wishes them a good day when they get off.
Sometimes he's there, at his security desk, and sometimes, he's just not.
Why not?
Surely that's an important post, and an important job, but his desk is often empty.
That seems like a thing that no one's talking about.
I just had this thought, inspired by a comment on the Severed podcast…
The feeding tube in Cobel’s shrine (labeled “Charlotte”) could be evidence that whoever Charlotte is/was is/was a part time innie, like Ms. Casey.
If part time innies are asleep 20+ hours a day, they’re going to need nutrition somehow…
Never noticed this in the show, do they incidcate if they're traveling up or down in the elevator? With no windows, I always imagined the severed floor in the basement/below what's going on in O world
They showed like 5 seconds of footage omg
This is the sequence from The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design
-
Helly’s Outie wakes up to find herself hanging in an elevator.
-
She struggles to relieve the tension on the rope by trying to put her feet on the railings.
-
The doors open in the lobby, and she’s still struggling, Judd isn’t there.
-
Mark goes to the elevator and calls it. The elevator goes back down to the severed floor.
-
Graner is shown running in the hallway.
-
The elevator doors open, Helly is limp and hanging.
-
Mark picks her up to relieve the tension on her neck and calls for help.
-
Graner comes and removes the rope. We can clearly see it is now slack as Graner unties it. Mark was able to let the rope loose to allow Helly to breathe.
-
They put her on the floor, her eyes are still closed.
-
Mark looks at Helly and asks if she’s okay, Graner orders him into the elevator.
-
Helly’s eyes are opening a bit. She lifts her head slightly from the floor. She might be looking at Mark. This shot seems purposeful. This could be just to let us know Helly is alive, but we’d find that out in a few minutes anyway.
-
Graner closes the elevator and sends Mark downstairs.
-
Helly’s lying flat on the floor, her eyes are now closed. She seems now unconscious.
Two questions. Is that Helly’s outie or innie on the floor? Did she see Mark helping her?
After Devon gave birth, Mark is back in the office, and Milchick says: “She was in outie form at the time she woke up, so this will be innie Helly’s first conscious experience since the hanging.” And then goes on about kind eyes.
When did Helly wake up in her outie form? In the hospital or on the severed floor after Mark and Graner took her down? If you are asleep or unconscious on the elevator, could that prevent the chip from switching from one state to another?
This has been bothering me because the show is so meticulous. Not a shot is wasted, so why the close up of Helly with her head slightly up and her eyes opened a bit?
Why did they need to clarify this on today's trailer? It's pretty obvious some titles are coming later..
Later as in next year vs this year?
Anyone know have context for what "later" means?
What do you guys think or what are your theories for everyone’s reason for being severed was (besides Mark and Helly)?
There are some really good tracks that I can hear playing in the show that just aren't in the album and its so sad. The two Im thinking of (although it wouldnt surprise me if there was more) is the music that played when Helly was trying to leave through the stairwell the first time, and the music that played during Irving's black paint dream.
I truly have no idea why composers would leave out some of their music, but I hope they release these tracks one way or another because it'd be really nice to listen to them.
Here’s my theory what will happen:
I have no f***ing clue.
Yep. I admit it. I have no idea what will happen. I can’t wait for Season 2 to find out though. Here’s a list of things I want to see:
-
Someone is going to get reintegrated. I suspect Mark because of the whole Gemma thing, but it could be Irv.
-
There’s a missing scene from the finale. It’s one where Helly’s innie, Jame Eagan, Natalie, and a few security guards see Helly smooching Mark in front of the elevators. Jame Kier is furious and revolted that Helly’s innie did that with his daughter’s lips. We don’t know Helly’s reaction. Was this ever filmed? Will we see it? Could it be modified, so it’s Helly’s outie watching her innie kiss Mark? That would be extremely interesting.
-
Dylan is caught red handed with the murdered Graner’s security card. Can Dylan finagle his way out of this? Will they trace this back to Mark?
-
Where’s Ms. Casey now? Will she be back? Will she recognize Mark? How in the heck did Lumon get their hands on Gemma? And will Ms. Cobel return?
-
Was Gemma and Mark both being there serendipitous or a plot by Lumon?
-
And what the heck with the goats? I don’t care about the numbers. I want to know about the goats.
It's definitely one of Eternal Sunshine, Office Space, One flew over the cuckoo's nest, Brazil
Based on the brief clips they showed at WWDC and some previous photos another user shared while they were filming I believe they are going to go back and tell the origin story of Mark becoming severed. I feel like we will get minimal answers from season 1.
This isn’t in any way a complete theory but it’s been something I think a lot about. I find it very unlikely there will be a 100% happy ending to this story. It’s a dystopian show and there is definitely gonna be some kind of devastating aspect to the ending. I think that it’s possible that within the last 2 seasons there will be a “saving” of Gemma. In the sense that she is released from the severance floor. My theory is that she will have lost all of her outties memories though. I think there could be a devastating discovery by Mark that his job on the severance floor was to erase the memories of Gemma. This would explain the emotions attached to the numbers they discard. Mark will have saved his wife only for her to never be the same.
