I’ve had this happen a few times. Luckily I always had a few low lvl alts I hadn’t played in years. I would log onto those characters and just run around and look in the bags and stuff and remember playing it. Get that real nostalgia hit before deleting it.

Yeah, same. I found a character like that and could solve the "problem". Also not the frist time for me.... :D

Its damn time they increase the amount

They’re not going to increase the amount while you have the option to pay them more for the increased character cap. You can have up to 8 accounts per bnet account, all with 50 characters.

u/Whiteshovel66 avatar

I wish they would allow you to just pay for the cap to increase though. I pay for two accounts and am fine with that, because of offers some advantages, but I dislike having to choose which account I make characters on, just in case I ever don't want to pay for the second account. As of now, the second account is basically just throwaway toons.

u/edifyingheresy avatar

Genuinely curious, how do you possibly play 50 characters enough to justify keeping all of them? I consider myself a pretty alt heavy player and I have roughly a dozen that I have enough time, interest and stamina to play. And I'm basically retired with all the time in the world I want to play. I can't imagine keeping 50 toons going.

u/DeadlyBannana avatar

As someone who has 50 max level toons, their main use is mount farming. Some things I'm the game are INCREDIBLY grindy. Look at sha of anger for example. 50 toons with rerol coins will still take on average around 20 weeks. (and that is if you get lucky with the 1/2000 chances). Now imagine if you have 10 alts. That's 100 bloody weeks (or two years) if it drops around the time it's supposed to.

While I do love the game I absolutely hate with all my heart whoever thought that anything below 1% drop rate with a weekly lockout is a good idea.

they dont, they only like making alts leveling them but never to 60 and dumping them for their new character

Ya, I don't. What happened for me was I used to play on one realm for a longgg time. Sadly had a pretty traumatic experience that caused me to leave the faction and realm all together. So I abandoned something like 14 characters on that realm that I all have a connection to and many of which have things like MoP CM ports, Jaina's locket etc. So obviously I am not deleting those.

There is also my original realm that I started on in the start of Classic. Lots of toons there that I have unique names and small items that don't exist anymore there too, but I never play any of them. Obviously not trying to delete those either, so we are at about 25 characters.

Now I am slowly building up a new alt army on a new realm / faction and running into the issues there.

The problem is I have a bunch of leveling challenge characters I have done that I would prefer to keep, but I have been slowly deleting one by one to make room for new toons.

At the end of the day though, I just LOVE the class and race dynamic in WoW. Sometimes I just make characters to jump around on them with the animations and stuff.

So now I just do the leveling challenges on the second account. Basically any toon that doesn't expect to see play at max level or any investment like gold and stuff.

Genuine question, the account max is 50, are you really playing 50 characters? You could play 4 of each class and still not be at the limit. That's a lot of characters...

As someone close to the limit (I think I have a couple spots), it's kind of easy. I have my original cast of characters I was playing early on when it wasn't such a pain to play alts, on my main server and main faction (Horde). I wanted to see what Alliance story is like, so made characters there, and for a while was a bit more active with my "Alliance main" so I was keeping the other characters up to support them.

From there, sprinkle in characters made to play with friends on different servers who've since been merged into the main servers' rosters, except one server I still have a few because I'm hoping that person gets back to playing.

On Horde side, I've got a pair of bank alts. Alliance side, I have one.

Allied Races get added, and if you want their heritage armor, you have to make a fresh character and level it, you can't just swap a character's race. So that adds new characters.

I enjoy different styles of play at times, collecting as much as possible (mounts, pets, toys, transmog), and crafting. Every expansion I try to max out all the professions, at least with my Horde characters. But I also like having options to pursue other things. Like for Legion I got all the class mounts. In Shadowlands I'm collecting at least the campaign sets for each of the four Covenants in each of the four armor types (and have been spending spare anima on other mounts and cosmetics).

I'm never flush with whatever the latest expansion's grinding currency is because I find grinding on one character to be super boring. If I wanted to do that, I'd play something like BDO. And it didn't help that I got into the habit when the game was at its most accessible... No endgame grind systems, and you could queue up for Heroic dungeons and gear up characters to "raid-ready" pretty well without having to spend too much time on it (handy because I had two characters who each had two specs that might get called on for raiding back then, but had the option of more if needed).

I like to sample everything the game has to do. Which is why I'm happier in expansions where the "side stuff" feels worthwhile.

Some of us just like playing the game like a buffet.

u/poss25 avatar

I have 50 and no, i don't play all of them. but i have played with all of them and they are all dear to my heart. it's really hard for me to delete one when i want a new character because each and everyone of them are associated with great memories and nostalgia. when i do delete one to make a new char, i usually login with them and take pictures to put into a RIP screenshot folder. I still regret deleting them but i have no choice ;_;

u/Caesium133 avatar

Maxing the character limit can also be about collecting.

Each one of them is another dice roll at mounts. 50 attempts per week is almost a year of farming in 7 days. People say "I've been farming for this since MoP" but use 1 character (do what you want, no disrespect) and don't have it. You can farm "since late 2014" and in about 8 weeks you'll match their attempts starting from 0.

I was being cheeky with a friend on discord and asked what would you do if I get Mimirons Head tonight? I knew I'd break 125 attempts and generally speaking my 1% drops didn't exceed 200. It dropped. This strategy gets tougher as the time to farm increases.

An alternative collection perspective you get a chance to collect and play one of ever class on both factions. Collect all druid races, all paladin races, have at least one of every race. I don't remember if shaman would fit inside 50 with the before mentioned criteria but I omitted them for some reason and only have 3.

My personal goal is "One of each spec". That's 36, soon to be 38 toons. Across those 36 I'm trying to get at least one of each race, with a decent H/A split as well.

Top that off with the fact that I have a "Legacy" Server that I played on in Vanilla with like 4-5 toons left as they were when I last logged out and I'm flirting with the toon cap as well.

More replies

I personally do. I rotate characters out every week or so, and I also play them to try to get drop mounts. I also have multiples on different servers that my friends are on :D

By DF prepatch you can't anymore, and traditionally they did increase the cap when introducing new races or classes iirc

u/ciarenni avatar

No, traditionally they have increased the server cap, not the account cap. The account cap has always been 50.

Most people don't need more than 50 toons (most people don't play more than 5). If you only get an hour to talk to the Blizzard devs, there are way more important things to discuss. We don't need to have a long conversation about this one.

Do people genuinely play 50 characters at once? I've been playing since late TBC and I have never ever encountered this problem lol, and I have one or two of each class at max level

I can give you my experience. Ever since my real life friends stopped playing WoW, I've become a nomad. Going from server to server, checking out communities, AH prices and stock, looking for a great place to stay. So I've created characters on servers (along with alts, gotta save those names!) and tried them out. Not often staying, but leveling and few and not wanting to delete the char, just in case.

I've settled on Stormrage now, but occasionally bounce around to Sargeras, Moon Guard, or Area 52 just to get a different local community. So for me, it's not that I play all 50, it's that I've got characters all over, in case I want to change servers.

Another is same classes on the same server. Like, I have a DK in a guild, but sometimes I don't want to be social, so I have another DK I'll play that's not in the guild.

Holy shit you just summed my long time WoW crisis of rolling new characters on "better" servers. Good to know I'm not the only one. I'm currently in the process of rerolling entirely on Area 52 (Horde) and Stormrage (Ally). I've had to delete a few 50s already because of the character limit it's pretty annoying. A lot of it is also getting that perfect race/class combo for transmogs/aesthetics and even that preference changes often so I'm kind of just all over the place.

Yep, my H are on 52 and A are on Stormrage. Funny enough, I've been putting all my items up on the AH on a few other chars (WrA and Farstriders) to fund getting heirloom upgrades, then I'll give the rest of the gold away and delete the chars. I'm pretty happy on SR (but I must admit, I will still play on MG, Sargeras, etc).

But if you ever need something on SR, just PM me.

My experience in Shadowlands was that i'd make an alt, hit 50, Chromie time ends, and i'd go make a new alt to level again.

All because making and levelling alts was more fun than playing the expansion. Came back to 9.2 after a year break though and I will say it's a lot less worse.

u/bullintheheather avatar

Play? No. Old characters that were important to me at one time me and I don't want to delete? Sure.

u/PositiveRainCloud avatar

I'm not sentimental enough to hold onto old characters if they have no face value. It leads to hoarding. But I do have a few characters that I no longer play, but keep due to having old legendaries and CM portals

More replies
u/l4z0rp3wp3w avatar

As you said in another comment, it's a bit of a hoarding thing, I guess. For me it's a lot about having several different race/class combos ready, so I have a big range to chose from for "what to play in the next expansion?" and that I spent a lot of time leveling all these characters. Of course I could raise a new char to max level in a fraction of the time I spent for the old ones, but often there are stories behind them and time spent with others. Over time such characters can add up and you run out of "throwaway characters" that you just leveled to 20 when you had no sub running.

EDIT: I leveled 2 new chars to 20 some weeks ago, because of the tier set previews for DF. I knew which classes I wanted to get these on and knew my existing races with that class would look like shit, so I had to get new ones, like a zandalari shaman.

Right?

I have probably 20 characters and all but 7 of them are just old forgotten alts on servers I no longer play on. How do people find the time/sanity to run that many characters?

You can use them to farm mounts, have different professions on them etc. Or you just like levelling

I guess farming mounts is reasonable if you don't mind running old raids 50 times in a week for increased odds.

But I don't get the rest. Even with every possible profession combo (including repeats, so multiple characters have, say, mining) you have left over slots. Even leveling every possible Chromie Time path two or three times to cover every possible zone leaves you with leftover slots.

I can't imagine a scenario where you need 50 characters unless you're literally doing something illegal/against the ToS. (I can imagine some people wanting to have 50 shots at Invincible from ICC, but that's gotta be a tiny minority and even if more people wanted to do things like that, where would they find the time?)

I just like creating class/race combos with themed names. :) I also enjoy having a mount farming army.

mission table gold is another.

They are always people who don’t have focus even in their real life. They often start one thing and don’t ever get to the top of it. I’ve often wondered if it’s something to do with their fear that they’ll put in the effort on one thing and make it to the top and still suck. I can relate to this feeling.

It definitely seems like a thing. Most of my friends who were like this , often start working a job or a business and never ever stick to it, even when they’re doing good. I’ve wondered if it’s some kind of undiagnosed issue. They’re also never happy. Even when their life is great and they have all the privileges. I’ve also noticed that they’re usually more privileged than anyone else. So they never have to really stick to anything for prolonged times out of necessity. They can always get by with luck and support from family or wealth so they easily give in to the impulse of being bored of something and dropping it. It often hurts others who are committed with them in that thing. I had a friend who would often start businesses and ask for our money. Sometimes they would pick up and be doing really good and they’ll just leave and quit to start something else, often hurting our investments of money and time. Same goes for a lot of alts in our guild. We just cannot progress because they’ll be a really important player on one particular alt and then just quit playing it and go to play a different character. Progression gets halted and all our effort of wipes, mats for food, etc gets wasted.

Crazy how accurately you described myself and my Dad. Never happy, always looking at what else I could be doing instead. Forever moving from one thing to the next never really mastering one thing but being decent at a lot of things. It sucks and it's actually crippling when you can't control it in your life. The only thing it's done is given me a lot of experiences that most people haven't had I guess. I really wish I could stick with one thing and be really good at it.

I've never understood why people care about character specific achievements. I'm not even sure how you can check it other than digging through the guild interface, and that only shows points and not the actual achievements. Even your armory profile shows your account achievements.

The only thing I care about is losing professions. Engineering has a lot of toys that only work if you have that expansion's engineering, like portals, or the Loot-a-rang (have to level that one up) and other cool things like Jeeves, Mailbox etc.

because I enjoy being attached to my main character that I have so many hours in and accomplished so much with, it's not only about the achievements but all the reps you have on it and all the time you spent on the character.

I've played for over a decade on my shaman and I'd never remake them and lose all of that just to save a few bucks in a race change, and I don't think anyone who has any substantial amount of time on their mains would either

I have 10 characters in about 4 or so servers all with different levels.

Had my mop/wod era with those characters capped at 40.

My legion era with those characters capped at 45.

My BFA era with those characters capped at 50 and a few other lower levels.

And my SL era with 4 characters at 60, rest between 50-60 and a few others in the lower levels.

Then a bunch of characters in different servers that were something I played once to try RP or because I was farming for a mount.

u/Lupinthrope avatar

My issue is making one, playing it abit then deleting it. The transmog sub doesn’t help me either

what a whole mood. I keep hitting the limit because I have my mains (all the core classes, Horde and Alliance) and then I keep making lore alts to go through each expansion on both sides and read quest texts. I can't just delete them, I'm not a MONSTER.

I'm at the point where I'd legitimately be willing to give Blizzard more money to buy more character slots

Yeah, I have 4 accounts all under one BN. Each one is full and one is a twink account.

Pretty sure people would still ask Blizzard to raise the limit even if it was currently at 100 lmao.

I'm currently capped out. Got a few chars left to level from 50 to 60 but as it stands I wont be able to make a Dracthyr without deleting characters.

u/snikaz avatar

Do you have 50 chars on lvl 50+? Thats insane lol

Yes and maybe.

I don't do any content I can't Que for and I usually only do the main progression of an expansion all the way on two characters (Horde and Alliance). I use the characters for mount/transmog farming and random BGs. I really enjoy employing the different racial abilities on different classes and BGs are the best showcase of their strengths and weaknesses imo.

Id like it most if I could make one of every race/class combo but I'd settle for any extension really.

As much as I'd share my sentiments with everyone about "more slots", I gotta hold back.

Main reason of my alts? Storage (trophy, books, rare/unique gear, old raid gear/etc.), professions/farming, achievements for the guild (Stay Classy!), RP characters (a few), bored leveling and that's... about it.

If "Blizz" added more Void Storage then I'd have more storage on mains except for old books or knickknacks.

If we could do "more" with old currencies, resources or do some daily trade vendors per expansion where we could spend down or turn in x, get y tokens, almost like Pandaria for cooking stuff. Or "War/Recovery efforts". I know with the modified auction / work order request things might help in the transmog/twink fields.

Old Alchemy/herbs are dead except for mount, cosmetic or turn to inks.

I had this happen sometime back when I had that itch to play wow again. Since my wow game time ended a long time ago I just kept making Alt combinations I never played before.

Props to Blizz for allowing us to have so many alts, and for free. I love Elder Scrolls Online but they only allow you to have 8 max (only 4 or 5 classes tho so i guess that’s fair?) by default and you have to pay if you want more.

I’ve got 39, and all but 5 of them are 60 (the others are ones I’m currently leveling to 60). I personally like to keep some around to level when I get tired of doing other stuff, and I rotate what characters I play each week.

Back when I was a raider, I rarely had time to focus on more than 2 characters, but as I got older and had kids and realigned my priorities (stopped raiding/stressing about endgame constantly and just relaxed and played casually), I was able to realize that I just really love leveling alts. And that’s what I started doing. Now I rotate through my 60s, doing ZM stuff, and level my non-60s. Once they all reach cap and get the unity belt from ZM, I make a few more to level. I already have a second account that I started leveling alts on, but it’s currently for “ugly” races. Stuff that I just wanted to level for heritage armor, but don’t actually like the races (dwarves, gnomes, Tauren mostly). My highest on that account is 39 I think.

Real question: once you already have access to every class, what is the push to level another character? WoW isn't exactly known for the leveling experience.

For example... I have a strong character/class fantasy that usually is tied to a specific spec. So I do like to have more characters of one class.
Then, I'm a roleplayer who has characters for RP only, in addition. I just level them up and RP with them.
